A project that started off as conceptual and ended in Judaica tools.
Thinking about the concept of “lock” led me to create two processes that deal with stone and imprisoned a concept inside a real object
(“locking it in”).
The first, showing light locked and emanating from a stone, uses techniques from the industrial world of stone processing and speaks of a possibility of creating objects, conventional or non-conventional, that highlight the gap between industrial processing and the natural organicity of the stone.
The second object is a ritual one, it’s a mezuzah, a prayer card locked inside a case made of Jerusalem stone aggregate and synthetic polymer in the foundry.
The mezuzah is a Jewish religious object, set on the side of the entrance to a dwelling house and on the lintel of most rooms in every house. The mezuzah case contains a parchment on which a number of biblical texts are written in traditional script.
Mezuzah is an object, of great value in Judaism, it serves as a sign of domestic peace and protects it. I took inspiration for the design from the way the prayer card is rolled up inside the mezuzah case and protects the household. Inside the case, The roll of parchment is in its turn, kept and protected within the case.
